We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate to join the microbial metabolic engineering group of Dr Patrik Jones to work on the European Commission Horizon 2020 funded project eForFuel (https://www.eforfuel.eu/). Our work is also carried out in association with entrepreneurial spinout developments such as AromatEco (https://www.aromateco.com/).
The group based at the South Kensington Campus of Imperial College London (http://www.imperial.ac.uk/microbial-metabolic-engineering), study and engineer the metabolism of heterotrophic and photoautotrophic bacteria with the objective to enhance our overall sustainability through biotechnological applications.
Duties and responsibilities
The focus of the eForFuel project (Horizon 2020 EU project) is to develop synthetic metabolic solutions for renewable chemicals manufacturing. The focus in this project at Imperial will be placed on (1) Engineering synthetic metabolic pathways in E. coli, and (2) Analysing such strains with the help of mass spectrometry based analysis.
Overall, this work will utilise the following methodologies: (a) Recombinant DNA construct preparation (i.e. molecular biology), (b) Transformation, selection, maintenance and cultivation of microorganisms (i.e. microbiology), (c) Sample preparation, Mass spectrometry, and Computational analysis of data (i.e. analytics).
The work will also involve a substantial component of teamwork, both within the group and as part of consortia and the associated spinout. There may also be other duties involved in the operation and outreach activities of the research group. All of the work is carried out within the framework of EU Horizon 2020 consortium projects that involves completing set tasks and deliverables in a creative and systematic manner, as well as to generate scientific publications.
You should have a PhD (or equivalent) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or a related subject.
You must be able to demonstrate the following:
- Experience and Knowledge with Molecular Biology
- Experience and Knowledge with Microbiology
- Experience and Knowledge of Biochemical analysis
Demonstrable experience and knowledge of engineering bacteria and mass spectrometry analysis are highly desirable but not essential.
You must have experience of working in a team, the ability to develop and apply new concepts and have a creative approach to problem-solving. You must also have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to write clearly and succinctly for publication. You must also be able to organise your own work with minimal supervision and prioritise effectively in response to deadlines.
This is a full time, fixed term post for five months with a possibility of an extension subject to further funding.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 – £39,183 per annum.
