Job Summary

Applications are invited for a fully funded 24-month position at the Research Assistant / Associate (PostDoc) level within the Turbulence Simulation Group in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London (https://www.turbulencesimulation.com/). The project aims to develop, implement and exploit machine intelligence paradigms to enable a new approach to wall-turbulence control. This new form of intelligent fluid-flow control will be used to develop practical wall-turbulence control strategies that can rapidly and autonomously optimise the aerodynamic surface with minimal power input whilst being adaptive to changes in flow speed.

The successful applicant will work as part of a larger team across Newcastle University and Imperial College London thanks to a £1.4M EPSRC grant, which is supported by Airbus, the Aerospace Technology Institute and the Department for Transport.

Duties and responsibilities

-Develop, implement and exploit machine intelligence paradigms to enable a new approach to wall-turbulence control using high-fidelity simulations.

-Contribute to the flow solvers XCompact3d (https://github.com/xcompact3d/).

-Write progress reports and prepare results for publication.

-Supervision of UG student projects.

-Contribution to teaching activities.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have a strong publication record preferably with relevant experience in computational fluid dynamics.

Those appointed at Research Associate level

Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computing, or a closely related discipline.

Those appointed at Research Assistant level

Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computing, or a closely related discipline.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 – £39,183 per annum.

This post is a fixed-term contract until 30 June 2023 with likely extension of up to a further 8 months pending UKRI approval.
