Fully-Funded PhD Studentship Opportunity in Environmental Science

Job Description

The ARIES Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) is offering you the opportunity to join its vibrant and diverse community of postgraduate researchers; a cohesive and supportive community of scientists working in all major areas of environmental science, notably:

  • Ecology and Biodiversity
  • Marine, Atmospheric and Climate Science
  • Geosciences, Resources and Environmental Risk
  • Environmental Genomics and Microbiology
  • Agri-environments and Water

You will carry out a research project in cutting-edge science, guided by a Supervisory Team who are experts in their field, and conduct a programme of advanced study leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Where there is a collaboration with a non-academic partner there may be additional Supervisors appointed from our extensive network of Collaborative Partners in industry, policy-making, and non-governmental organisations.

You will be hosted at one of our five UK Universities or nine Research Organisation Partners.

You will participate in advanced training that is integral to your ARIES Studentship. You will train together with your cohort year group through a series of Summer/Winter Schools and other group events, building a close network of fellow students who support each other through the PhD and beyond. Our DTP community comprises more than 150 students at different stages of their PhD studies.

Benefits

Funding is available for a 3.5 year Studentship starting October 2021. The award covers tuition fees and an annual stipend at a rate set by the UK Research Councils (£15,285 in 2020). We are able to offer a limited number of places to international applicants on the same basis (i.e. there is no international fee supplement payable). ARIES funding will not, however, cover any costs associated with visa or health surcharges, or any other additional costs associated with entry to, and living in, the UK.

There is a generous allowance to cover your anticipated research costs (project-dependent), and an additional budget of £2,500 for you to attend international conferences and meetings, and for any additional essential training.

Job Requirements

Applications are invited from students with backgrounds in subjects relevant to the project(s) in which they are interested; specific details are given in each project description. Some projects are open to those with no formal background in the environmental sciences, but with strong qualifications or experience in quantitative disciplines such as Maths, Engineering and Physics, who may qualify for a additional 3 months stipend (see “Highly Numerate Candidate Scheme”).

You are expected to have a first or upper first/upper-second UK honours degree, or qualifications equivalent to these. In selecting successful applicants, the DTP is looking for the potential for applicants to succeed in their chosen research area alongside their academic qualifications.

Detailed eligibility requirements can be found here.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We believe that everyone has a right to be treated with dignity and respect, and to be provided with equal opportunities to flourish and succeed. We encourage enquiries and applications from all sections of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, age, sexual orientation and transgender status. Academic qualifications are considered alongside significant relevant non-academic experience. Studentships may be undertaken on a part-time or full-time basis, visa requirements notwithstanding.

How To Apply

You should first select one or more projects (up to three) that interest you from our website at www.aries-dtp.ac.uk/study-with-us/. You must then apply to the University associated with the project(s) selected; in all cases the required application portal is given at the bottom of the project details. Only formal applications made through the official portal(s) will be considered for funding. A conversation with prospective supervisors before applying is recommended (details on each project page).

Informal enquiries can be sent to: aries.dtp@uea.ac.uk, or to the lead Supervisor of the project(s) of interest.
